Here at GlobalGarage.org, we discuss a ton of things including cargo pants and bike racks, but, when it comes down to it, garages are our main focus. Just as any other room in your home, it is important that the garage is kept organized, especially if you plan on working in there opposed to using it as a place where you only store your car and other items you barely use.

There are quite a few things you can do to make your garage a place that is organized so finding your stuff easily. So, let’s get started organizing your garage.

7 Garage Organizing Tips

Lose the Clutter

You will find that there is a recurring theme in this blog post, and that is the idea that attacking your garage is the same as attempting to reorganize any other room in your home. As with anything else in life, it’s good to start at the beginning. The place to start when organizing is the excess items you aren’t using, wearing, playing with, or utilizing in any way shape or form.

The typical rule is if you haven’t used it in 6 months or more than donate it, sell it, or throw it away. In an ideal world we would only keep the things we needs and free ourselves front eh weight of excess. Do this by getting rid of your clutter. After this step, the rest of this project will be a breeze.

Attach a Pegboard

The next step is to create a space that can hold the items you need in a way that is easily accessible. As we were talking about earlier, there are items like snow shovels and lawn mowers that are used seasonally but what about your screwdrivers or your drill? These items can be used at any time of the year and it’s a great idea to keep them in a place where you can reach them easily and putting them away isn’t such a hassle.

Pegboard walls, with the additions of some hooks there or an outline here, can take one full wall of your garage and turn it into a space that stores nearly everything from brooms to hammers. Of course, you want to make sure that you measure correctly and get only what you need and if you need help, find some. Adding a wall of pegboard isn’t a job you can just walk right into so do your research.

Shelves, Shelves, Shelves

They come in all kinds of shapes and size but, when we are talking about garages, there is nothing wrong with taking a look as some of the incredible utility shelves. We recommend getting the metal or plastic kind. Avoid wood shelves for the garage. Very few of us heat our garages in the winter or air condition them in the summer.

Because of the possible weather in your area, wood shelves can become swollen with moisture particularly from humidity. There are styles of shelves that can be stacked as high as you need them. Shop around for the best deal you can find and again, make sure you measure the space you plan on installing/placing your shelves. It would be a shame to buy a unit that you love and then find it won’t work in your garage.

Ceiling Bikes

This is a great way to make space on the floor of your garage. Take all the bikes in the family and get some hooks to fasten to the ceiling. Once all the bikes are out of the way you will be amazed at how much room your garage has to offer.

Group like Items

When you start putting things back into your garage after that huge de-cluttering day you went through on the advice of a certain blog try to keep like things with like things. Winter items like shovels, put them on one side of the pegboard, hanging down where you can see them.

Your winter items like shovels and snow blowers will be in one place while your spring and summer necessities including your lawn mower and electric weed eater, like the ones reviewed here at Backyard Boss.  Then take your clippers, hoe, and other gardening equipment and put them all together on that pegboard wall as well or dedicate an entire shelf to summer gardening things. This way, when you are in a rush to do a chore finding the right tools will not be a problem.

Foldable Workbench

If you are the kind of person who is planning on using your garage for other tasks like building soapbox racers with your children or woodworking then you will need a workbench. Have you ever heard of a Murphy bed? This is the type of bed that hides in the wall and unfolds when needed.

Take this idea and build a table that comes right out of the wall when you need it, but folds back up for hiding so that your garage doesn’t always look like there is a project on hand.

Create a Mudroom

This might be moving in the opposite direction, but, once you rid your family of all the clutter in the garage then consider creating a space near the door that goes to the house, if your garage is attached, and leave a nice bench for you and your loved ones to sit in while taking off their shoes.

We don’t want to get too far into it but the shoes you wear outside of your home have so much dirt and bacteria, it would be healthy if everyone just took their shoes off when they walked into their home. An easy way to instill this practice is by having a mud room, a place the family can take off their coats and shoes before entering the house.

Conclusion

There are so many reasons why organizing a space is good for us. When we finish we get a sense of accomplishment and have a space that feels good to work in and gives way to creativity and productivity. Organize that garage and take another step toward creating the perfect home for yourself.
